“Limbaugh is a racist, Glenn Beck is a racist, Gaza strip was getting bombed, Obama didn’t say shit”. Lupe Fiasco’s words sampled as the refrain, this is Lowkey’s reponse to Glenn Beck attempting to mock him on his radio show for his song, Terrorist. Of course, Beck just makes himself look a fool, but that wouldn’t be the first time.
Featuring M1 of Dead Prez and Black the Ripper, as well as Lowkey, this is a savage attack on the policies of US president Obama. It pulls no punches, for sure, and it has elements of what one might term “conspiracy theory” in the lyrics, M1 suggesting that the fact that Obama was raised in Chicago, where “Chairman Fred (Hampton) and Mark Clark of the Black Panthers were assassinated points to guilt by association with a corrupt political class.
Black the Ripper’s lines and delivery give you the political background to the London riots. Yes, there may have been mindless looting, but the anger that began with the injustice of the Mark Duggan shooting had far more to do with political anger at the UK’s racist and bloody neocolonialist invasions of middle eastern countries and abandonment of its own citizens than is ever given credit for. “Revolution’s on the way, whatcha gonna do?” No need for a costly and painfully slow public inquiry. Listen to the words of this man. He’s warning you. Ignore him at your peril.
And then, finally, Lowkey, just brings it home. The extension of war in Afghanistan. We can be generous with Obama and say that he is fighting insurmountable forces in US politics and has little choice but to follow the lead of (as Bill Hicks memorably said) the 12 industrialist-capitalist scumfucks who got him in there, but then he must be criticised for leading on so many Americans that “Change” was gonna come. It hasn’t, and this brilliantly shot video impresses upon us the bankruptcy of US politics. It’s far more relevant to listen to rappers than politicians for truth. And in a so-called democracy that is a sad state to be in.
